Meet the Iron Stained Cedar Basic G

This is a Native American style A flute made of western red cedar with a natural, iron stain applied to darken the wood into a rich black color. This transparent stain allows the beautiful wood grain to show through adding character to the flute. Our iron stained flutes are made from the same wood as our heartwood cedar flutes, they are only different in appearance. Both colors of Basic flute have the same careful tuning and voicing as our more expensive flutes.

This is our most popular flute! Made from locally sourced western red cedar, the Basic G flute is a wonderful introductory flute! You can ask any flute enthusiast what flutes they have in their collection and you will likely hear “key of G” on the list. The reason for this is its mid range voice that has both soothing deeper tones and higher more cheerful tones. Luckily for beginner flute players out there, it is also fairly easy to play! It the middle sized flute of the three Basic flutes we offer. It is well suited for people with average sized hands who don’t have hand flexibility issues (if you have arthritis for instance, you may be better starting with the key of A which is smaller. That said, hands do become more mobile when they are used genteelly and often as they are with flute playing! If you love the lower sounding flutes, you can work your way down to the lower, larger keys by starting with the key of G.

The Stellar Basic G flute is a Native American style flute tuned to feature a pentatonic minor scale. Native flutes are characterized by a two chamber design with a piece (we call the block) that sits on top and channels the air you blow into one chamber across an opening to the second chamber (imagine blowing across a bottle). Our flutes are tuned to the universal standard 440HZ tuning which in simpler terms means that they are compatible with the majority of other instruments. That all sounds confusing if you are new to music, but all you truly need to know for now is that the scale they feature is easy to play and sounds good just about any way you play it so it is wonderful for people who don’t read music or people who are looking for an instrument to play in an unstructured way. Each flute comes with a booklet that has drawings of which holes to cover. We want you to be successful in your flute playing journey!
